The upgrade of Hungary’s sole nuclear plant in Paks could receive an environmental certificate as early as this year, Attila Aszódi, government commissioner responsible for the upgrade, told Hungarian news agency MTI yesterday.

Speaking to the news agency on the sidelines of a conference organized by the Hungarian Scientific Society of Energy Economics, Aszódi said an application for a site license may also be submitted this year.

The commissioner added that the building permit for the two new blocks could be issued by 2018, according to plan. He said he expects the new blocks to go online in 2025 and 2026.
