Infrastructural developments and the growing number of smartphones in Hungary has led to an increase in mobile data traffic by a year-on-year 35% in quarter four of last year, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said today.

In absolute terms, mobile data traffic reached a total of 9,135 terabytes in Q4, which, despite the increase, is still a fraction of the 274,428 terabytes of downloads and 146,849 terabytes of uploads performed using fixed lines, KSH noted.

However, mobile internet subscriptions accounted for 65% of all internet subscriptions at the end 2014, increasing by 2.4 percentage points from a year earlier. Office data suggests that overall internet subscriptions rose by 12%, up to 7.2 million. KSH said that concentration in the market increased with seven internet service providers accounting for 93% of all subscriptions during the period.

Mobile phone subscriptions edged up to 11.8 million in Q4, increasing by 120,000 as compared to the same period a year earlier. About 55% of the total were post-paid subscribers. In the fourth quarter, subscribers spent 422 minutes on average talking on the phone.

Net revenue of the telecommunications sector fell 3% to HUF 203.7 bln in Q4 as compared to the same period a year earlier, the KSH said.
