Hot summer hurts Hungary’s corn harvest

Weather

The summerʼs extremely hot weather has reduced this year’s corn harvest in Hungary to approximately six million tons, Minister of Agriculture Sándor Fazekas said at a festival in southeastern Hungary on Saturday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

The minister said that Hungarian farmers harvested approximately 9.3 million tons of corn last year, which equates to a hundred-year record.

The National Grain Growers Association said earlier that it expected the extreme summer heat to bring the countryʼs corn harvest down to less than 7 million tons. Despite the smaller harvest, however, the price of corn was not expected to rise substantially.
