Following approval, Paks to switch to 15-month fuel cycle

Hungary’s sole nuclear power plant Paks will switch to a 15-month fuel cycle from its current 12-month cycle, as it has recently received regulatory approval for the move, plant operator Paks Atomerőmű said, Hungarian news agency MTI reported today.

Extending the length of the cycles will allow the operator to cut maintenance costs and downtime as well as reduce the amount of nuclear waste, the operator said, adding that production can be ramped up, which should result in a 1% drop in Hungaryʼs annual electricity imports.

According to Hungarian news agency MTI, the longer-lasting fuel rods will be installed in all four reactors of the plant by the end of 2016.
