The “Roma and Friends” camps bring together 11-14 year-old Roma and non-Roma students from Hungary, and their English teachers for a one-week English language camp experience that focuses on mutual tolerance and the development of English language skills.
The more than 90 campers are from Abaújkér, Balassagyarmat, Hejőkeresztúr, Heves, Isaszeg, Papkeszi, Szenna, Szikszó, Tiszaföldvár and Budapest, and their camp schedule includes English language classes, American sports such as baseball, arts and crafts, drama training led by American specialists, folk dance, and English language games that encourage them to socialize with each other and their camp counselors in English. The camp counselors are Hungarian university students and other young Hungarian and American educators.
