He said the state would cover the additional heating costs, calling them “an unexpected and significant burden” on families.

“We need to crank up the regulated utilities price scheme and we will,” he added, describing it as the cabinet’s top priority.

Orbán noted that Hungary had not experienced such a cold January in decades, underscoring the importance of regulated energy pricing and the country’s continued access to cheap Russian oil and gas.

He also remarked that Hungary had “beat the snow” a week earlier, despite the challenging weather.
