According to the latest probabilistic models from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), expected snow totals have increased nationwide, signaling that winter will not ease off in the upcoming days.
In recent years, similar promising snow setups often weakened at the last moment, but current data suggests this system will hold, the report by idokep.hu notes.
The most dramatic accumulation is forecast for southern Hungary. In and around Szeged, most model scenarios now project more than 30 centimeters of snow by Thursday evening, including snow already on the ground. Some higher-end projections exceed 50 centimeters, which would be exceptional for the region.
On a national scale, expected snow depths have also edged higher. With the exception of northwestern and far northern areas, most of the country, including Budapest, is now likely to see snow cover exceeding 10 centimeters. Transport, logistics and public services may face challenges, particularly in regions unaccustomed to sustained heavy snowfall.
