Number of Farms Down 19% From 2020

There are around 196,000 farms in Hungary, down 19% from 2020, according to preliminary results from a survey of the agriculture sector conducted by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) in the spring and summer.

Presenting the results this week, KSH department head Péter Tóth said the number of farms under 1 hectare had been halved in the past three years, while the number larger than 1,000 hectares had dropped around 20%.

The share of crop farms rose to 73%, while the share of livestock farms fell to 14%.

The share of farmers over the age of 65 stands at 37%, while the share under the age of 40 is just 10%.

The share of farmers who have finished a secondary education program in agriculture is 34% and 11% have a higher education degree.
