The ASF virus has never before been detected in Hungary’s stock of commercial hogs.
Protection and surveillance zones have been established around the farm in Vállaj and some 3,000 hogs are being destroyed.
Agriculture and Food Minister Szabolcs Bóna said he had called a meeting with pork industry insiders for Monday in a post on Facebook.
He acknowledged the negative impact of the outbreak on a sector that is already in a difficult market position and urged Hungarians to continue to buy local pork products.
At a press conference on Thursday, Nébih head Imre Nemes said the ASF outbreak had affected other countries in the region, including a number of neighboring ones.
He noted that ASF had been detected in Hungary in 2018, but only in the wild boar population.
