‘Son of Saul’ takes Golden Globe for best foreign film
Hungarian director László Nemes’ “Son of Saul” has received an award for best foreign-language film at the annual Golden Globes held yesterday, according to reports.
The film, which addresses the horrors of the Holocaust through a micro-narrative, is the first feature from the Hungarian director. It was the winner of the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival last year and was recently shortlisted for the Oscars, also in the best foreign-language film category.
A former assistant to renowned Hungarian director Béla Tarr, Nemes studied film in New York and wrote and directed three award-winning shorts including “With a Little Patience” and “The Counterpart” prior to writing and directing “Son of Saul”.
Renowned Hungarian film director István Szabó reportedly told state-owned all-news channel M1 this morning that the Golden Globe win can help raise awareness of other recent Hungarian productions and he hopes that it will attract more Hungarians to cinemas to watch Hungarian films.
