Wizz Air starts new route to Moscow from Debrecen

The new Debrecen service is the third route to Russia from Wizz Air’s Hungarian network, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal. Seats are already on sale, with fares starting from HUF 8,990. 

Since 2013, the airline has connected Budapest with Moscow via a daily flight, and it recently also launched a Saint Petersburg service, also from the Hungarian capital. Wizz Air’s first commercial flight took off from Debrecen Airport in 2012, and since then the airline has expanded its Debrecen network to seven low-fare routes to seven countries.

In the past 12 months, more than four million passengers have flown with Wizz Air to and from Hungary, 17% more year-on-year, the press release says. With 15 new services commencing this year, and at least two more due in 2018, Wizz says it now offers 73 routes from its two Hungarian airports.

"In the year of Wizz Airʼs first commercial flight from Debrecen, the airport registered 50,000 passengers; in 2017 we are expecting to reach 320,000 passengers," said Debrecen Mayor László Papp at the official announcement of the new route. "Along with this, Debrecen tourism enjoys a growth of more than 10%, in close correlation with Wizz Airʼs network development. A great example of this is the fact that, thanks to Wizz Airʼs Tel Aviv route launched in March this year, Israel became the biggest sending country to Debrecen by May."
