Wizz Air adds 7 routes from Debrecen
Low-cost Hungarian airline Wizz Air today announced seven new routes from the eastern city of Debrecen and an additional Airbus A320 aircraft, to be put into operation from December this year.
Wizz Air will launch flights to Dortmund, Basel, Doncaster/Sheffield and Barcelona starting mid-December, and to Larnaca, Palma de Mallorca and Malta at the end of March 2019.
Together with the new connections, the frequency of two of the most popular services from Debrecen, to Tel Aviv and Paris Beauvais, will be increased from two to three flights weekly - adding a total of 16 incremental flights to Wizz’s 2019 schedule from Debrecen.
Today’s announcement brings Wizz Air’s investment in its Debrecen base to more than USD 200 million. In 2019, by increasing its operations by 50%, the airline will offer almost 600,000 seats on 14 routes to 11 countries. The new aircraft will arrive in December 2018 and will support services on the seven new routes.
Wizz Air will have a local staff of more than 70 direct employees, with its next recruitment drive already scheduled in the city in May.
State news wire MTI cited CEO József Váradi as saying that Debrecen is benefiting from the fact that budget rival Ryanair has closed its base in Oradea, Romania.
Váradi said Wizz Air is taking delivery of a total of 21 aircraft, launching 70 new routes and adding 700 flights to its capacity over 17 weeks. Rolling annual passenger numbers exceeded 30 million by April this year, he added, claiming that Wizz Airʼs network is the most extensive in Europe, including 141 destinations on 600 routes.
Installation of the ILS II security system at Debrecen Airport is expected to be completed at the end of 2019, at a cost of HUF 1.3 billion, MTI added.
