The Bright Smart City theme of this year’s hackathon drew in dozens of engineering students, who were sorted into ten teams, each with between four and five members at the preliminary meetup on October 18.

The students were drawn from five faculties of the Óbuda University, although the competition also had an international flavor, since besides Hungary the home countries of the entrants were Tunisia, Kazakhstan, Ecuador and Vietnam. Their work was helped by an eight-member mentoring team, five taken from the university, and three supplied by Tungsram.

The hackathon’s full title was “Bright Smart City: the LED Revolution, Modern Lighting Solution in the City of the Future”, and called for solutions that will make cities more interesting, safe and beautiful through new lighting technologies.

“One of the goals was not just to make the life of those living is smart cities more pleasant, but also more healthy; even more, the solutions should be ‘loveable”, making their lives easier with their practical approach,” a Tungsram spokesperson told the Budapest Business Journal.

István Magyar, the COO of Tungsram said that the company HQ, situated in the “industrial golden triangle” of Budapest and the venue for the hackathon, should be inspiring for the future engineers. “These young talents have to meet the challenges of Industry 4.0 and smart cities,” he added.

László Korányi, director of innovation at Óbuda University and one of the main organizers, advised the teams to keep in mind that, beyond the technological approach, their solutions should be for the end users

The winning team was formed by four foreign students. Their ideas was traffic solutions based on LED lighting and named “e-Flow”, serving the drivers with an improved flow of information, thereby reducing traffic jams.
