The watchdog said Duolingo’s information, in Hungarian, on terms of use for its web- and mobile application-based platforms was not easily accessible to Hungarian consumers.
Duolingo touts its services as “the best way in the world” to learn languages, without backing up the assertion, and its claim that nine of ten learners who use the app can “speak confidently” is likely overstated, it added.
Duolingo’s restrictions on services that are free of charge may be misunderstood, while users are sent unwanted direct messages encouraging their further use of the app and upgrades to the paid version, GVH said.
GVH has an initial three-month period during which to conduct the probe.
