Mattheisen departs Magyar Telekom after long spell at top
Magyar Telekom on Tuesday announced the resignation of its CEO Christopher Mattheisen. He will leave the company as of July 1, 2018, and will be replaced by Tibor Rékasi, chief commercial officer for residential services since January last year.
MTelʼs board of directors approved the termination of Mattheisenʼs employment contract and position as CEO "at his request" at a meeting on Monday, according to a statement sent to national news agency MTI.
Mattheisen has been MTelʼs CEO since December 2006, as well as a member of the board, including many years as its chairman. Before that, he was deputy CEO in charge of the fixed-line division for four years. Following his resignation, he will concentrate on his private business.
Tibor Rékasi has been CCO - Residential at Magyar Telekom since January 2017. Before that, he held positions as CEO of T-Systems and CCO - Enterprise at MTel. He joined the MTel group in 2008 as CEO of IT subsidiary IQSYS.
The board decided to appoint Melinda Szabó, who until recently worked in sales and marketing at Vodafone Hungary, to replace Rékasi as CCO - Residential.
Online news portal index.hu cited Timotheus Höttges, CEO of parent company Deutsche Telekom, as paying tribute to the key role Mattheisen has played in the business success of the company for over a decade, adding that the group has achieved extraordinary results under his leadership in both the corporate and retail sectors.
"I felt that this is the ideal time to pass on the baton to my successor Tibor Rékasi, who has the clear vision and ability to lead the company on to further success," Mattheisen was quoted as saying in the MTel announcement. "Besides his experience in the areas of IT and systems integration, he has achieved significant success in the telecommunications field as well, and has been an effective leader of the retail arm for the past year and a half," he added.
