As part of the project, a direct cycle route from Komárom through Esztergom to the Danube Bend is currently being developed within the EuroVelo 6 network, Vitézy said in a Facebook post on Friday.

Cycling infrastructure has already been built along several sections of the Slovak-Hungarian border, but a coherent, modern network has yet to be created, he said.

Under current plans, the section between Esztergom and Tát will be replaced with a new, safer route using HUF 2.8 billion (EUR 7.7 mln) in funding from the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme Plus.

Planning for the section is now beginning, with construction potentially starting in 2028. The aim is to extend the cycle route to the Mária Valéria Bridge in Esztergom, Vitézy said.

EuroVelo routes span the continent and are designed to support high-quality cycling tourism. In many locations, they also serve as important transport corridors used not only by tourists, but by people cycling to work or school, the minister added.
