The project involves extending the M3 line from its current Újpest-központ terminus toward Káposztásmegyer.
The plans had already been available on BKK’s website for some time, but the project returned to the agenda after an announcement on Wednesday by Minister of Transport Dávid Vitézy that the northern section extension of the M3 metro line will go ahead with EU funding.
Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony said Wednesday that there would now be enough time and funding to extend the line as far as the Rákospalota-Újpest railway station, which he described as a significant step forward.
The planned extension is intended to create a direct, high-quality fixed-rail public transport link between the Újpest and Káposztásmegyer housing estates, Rákospalota-kertváros, the Újpest district center and downtown Budapest.
The project also aims to create a public transport reception zone serving the capital’s northern agglomeration and improve traffic organization in the north Pest area.
Karácsony called the decision a historic day for public transport in Hungary and Budapest.
