Budapest Airport, part of the VINCI Airports network, said it has been preparing for the summer season for months. The airport operator is encouraging passengers to plan ahead, use online services where possible and take advantage of new digital tools designed to make travel smoother.

The airport’s recently revamped website now includes a personalized travel guide, an interactive terminal map, current offers and flight notifications. Passengers can also find answers to frequently asked questions, while accessibility settings are available through an icon in the bottom left corner of the page.

Plan Ahead and Check in Online

After choosing a destination, passengers are advised to check the documents and entry requirements needed for their trip, including ID cards, passports, visas and any required vaccinations. Budapest Airport also recommends checking the expiration dates of travel documents and finding out about healthcare services, emergency phone numbers and pharmacies at the destination.

Passengers transporting medicines or medicinal ointments, as well as those who are pregnant or ill, are advised to obtain an English-language certificate from their doctor in advance, as it may be checked before departure.

Most airlines offer online check-in, and Budapest Airport recommends completing this step before the deadline set by the airline to ensure a faster start at the airport.

The airport also advises passengers to check baggage rules before packing, including airline-specific limits on size and weight, as well as restrictions on what may be carried in hand baggage, checked baggage or not at all.

Documents, wallets, boarding passes, medicines and items needed for children should be kept in hand baggage. Hygiene products may also be useful on long-haul flights, during transfers or in the event of delays.

Passengers are encouraged to bring an empty water bottle, which can be taken through security and refilled at drinking fountains after screening. The airport said staying hydrated is important during both summer heat and flights.

Getting to Budapest Airport

Budapest Airport can be reached by public transportation, taxi, shuttle, car-sharing service or private car. The airport is offering more than 7,000 parking spaces this summer, including nearly 90 electric charging stations.

Passengers using airport parking are encouraged to book in advance. Those dropping off or picking up family members or friends can use the dedicated zone in Terminal Parking, located a few minutes’ walk from the terminal and accessible via a covered walkway.

Budapest Airport recommends arriving at least 2.5 hours before departure and, where possible, entering the terminal without an escort to reduce congestion. Passengers who have checked in online and are traveling only with hand baggage can proceed directly to passenger screening.

The airport’s website and terminal information points show whether screening is faster on the Terminal 2A or 2B side.

Faster Baggage Drop-off and Downtown Service

Self-service baggage drop-off is available as a faster alternative to traditional check-in counters for participating airlines. Passengers can scan the barcode or QR code on their boarding pass at a kiosk, attach the baggage tag to their suitcase and place it on the designated conveyor belt.

For Ryanair flights, passengers should use the airline’s app during the process. Once the baggage tag is scanned, the bag follows the same route as any other checked baggage.

A new option this summer is also available for Wizz Air passengers, who can check in baggage in downtown Budapest at the AirportHUB outlet on Kálvin Square through the Bag Free Hub service. Baggage must be checked in at least four hours before departure. The service is not available for flights to Baku and Tel Aviv.

Accessibility and Passenger Support

Budapest Airport said an indoor navigation application has been available since June as part of the Danova Next project, co-funded by the European Union. The app helps visually impaired passengers, wheelchair users and other travelers navigate both the land- and airside areas of the terminal.

Its wheelchair mode prioritizes accessible routes, offering personalized assistance. The airport has also installed tactile lanes at the curbside and inside the terminals, while spacious elevators support movement between floors.

Passengers are advised to download the GateWay app before leaving for the airport. Those requiring assistance can indicate their needs in advance through Budapest Airport’s website.

The airport has also joined the international Sunflower Program for passengers with hidden disabilities. Staff working in passenger services have been trained to recognize and assist travelers wearing the sunflower symbol.

For passengers with autism or sensory sensitivity, Budapest Airport operates a sensory room at Pier 1, next to the children’s play area. The room provides a quiet, low-stimulus environment with furnishings, lighting and soundproofing designed to make waiting more comfortable.

Security Screening and Passport Control

From June, higher-capacity passenger security lanes designed to speed up screening are available at the airport. Budapest Airport reminded travelers that electronic devices no longer need to be removed from bags during screening.

Passengers can also use the Fast Track Lane, while dedicated lanes are available for families traveling with small children and for passengers with reduced mobility.

For flights to countries outside the Schengen Area, passport control takes place in Terminal 2B after security screening. Passengers are advised to have their documents ready while waiting in line. Non-EU passport holders should allow enough time for Entry/Exit System checks.

Services for Families and Leisure Before Departure

Passengers traveling with small children can use strollers provided free of charge by Budapest Airport after passenger screening until boarding. The terminal also has seven nursing rooms and three children’s play areas.

Before departure, passengers can visit airport restaurants, cafes, lounges and shops, or use soundproof quiet boxes if they prefer a calmer environment.

Travelers can also play the piano or listen to others perform at Liszt Studio in Pier 1 or at the piano in Terminal 2B. Those traveling to non-Schengen countries can visit the installation dedicated to composer Ferenc Liszt, after whom the airport is named.

Smoking is permitted only on the airport’s observation terraces.
