Spar launches HUF 1.7 bln local supplier program

Retail

Supermarket chain Spar on Tuesday announced the launch of a HUF 1.7 billion program to put the products of small, regional suppliers on the shelves of its stores, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Under the "Regional Treasures" initiative, Spar is setting up six supplier centers around the country that will ensure small producers a chance to sell to the supermarket chain. Spar is also starting a suppliers' "academy" to educate its new business partners on logistics, marketing, and quality assurance.

Spar launched the program as a condition for the cancellation of an oversight procedure by the Competition Office (GVH) which earlier found Spar violated rules by requiring suppliers to pay fees. The program will be rolled out fully by the end of 2022.
