Retail sales in Slovakia went down by 8.5% year-on-year in May, marking the fourth straight month of fall, although easing from a 10.1% plunge in April, figures from the Bratislava-based Slovak Statistical Office (SÚSR) on Thursday show.

The drop was partially offset by a surge in sales of automotive fuel in specialized stores (36.9% vs 29.1% in April).

At the same time, declines eased for sales in not in stores, stalls or markets (-4.8% vs -13.6%), food, beverages & tobacco in specialized stores (-9.7% vs -16.1%), non-specialized stores (-9% vs -9.8%), via stalls & markets (-18.7% vs -29.6%), and other household equipment in specialized stores (-18.8% vs -21.8%).

On a monthly basis, retail trade rose by 1%, rebounding from a 5% fall in the previous month
