Retail sales in Romania rose 1.1% year-on-year in August, easing from an upwardly revised 1.4% increase in the previous month, data from the Bucharest-based National Institute of Statistics (INS) showed on Wednesday.

Sales slowed for non-food products (1.6% vs 5.1% in July), as trade dropped for non-specialized shops (-5.9% vs -12.6%) and moderated for specialized shops (2.3% vs 7.6%). Additionally, sales continued to drop for automotive fuel (-1.3% vs -3.4%).

On the other hand, sales accelerated for food products (2.7% vs 0.5%), due to a rebound in trade for non-specialized shops (1.4% vs -0.1%), and a further rise in specialized shops (20.7% vs 18.3%).

On a monthly basis, retail sales grew 0.1%, following a downwardly revised 0.1% fall in July.
