Production at the EV plant China's BYD is building in Szeged (175 km southeast of Budapest by road) could start in 2025, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a post on Facebook last week.

"The necessary permits have been obtained and construction work in Szeged has started. The construction of infrastructure is also underway, so the first BYD models could roll off the line at the plant in Szeged next year already," Szijjártó said.

"We're not stopping here, as it's important to us for all segments of the automotive industry to be present in Hungary, from production to research to services, which is why we've discussed the further expansion of cooperation between BYD and Hungary," Szijjártó added.

BYD announced plans to build the car plant in Szeged, its first in Europe, in December 2023.
