Employees, partners, and local stakeholders gathered at the event, which provided an opportunity to look back on the site’s development and its role in the local community, while also looking ahead to future developments.

Since launching its operations in Hungary in 1996, Michelin says it has made investments totaling nearly HUF 210 billion in the country, establishing a nationwide presence that includes tire manufacturing in Nyíregyháza, logistics operations in Vác (36 km south of the capital) and Tuzsér (297 km northeast), as well as a sales office in Budapest. The firm currently employs more than 1,300 employees across its sites in the country.

In Nyíregyháza, as part of an investment program worth nearly HUF 16 bln, the company replaced the previously steam-powered vulcanizing presses with electric presses and installed electric boilers to meet the remaining steam demand. These changes have increased the energy efficiency of the vulcanization process sixfold and enabled the use of renewable electricity in passenger tire production.

The firm says digital initiatives in manufacturing, employee development programs, and renovated office spaces have boosted performance, strengthened adaptability, and improved the workplace experience.

“What we have achieved since 1996 reflects the dedication and ingenuity of our teams,” says Tomasz Kuklo, managing director of Michelin Hungária Kft. and director of the Nyíregyháza plant. “The modernization of the Nyíregyháza plant clearly demonstrates our confidence in this site and our commitment to combining strong industrial performance with a reduction in our environmental impact.”

Sustainable Tires

Building on the transition to renewable electricity, the Nyíregyháza site plans to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions further. The Michelin Group, which is headquartered in Clermont-Ferrand, France, and operates in 175 countries, has a global goal of manufacturing tires made entirely from renewable, recycled, bio-based, or other sustainable materials by 2050.

During the anniversary ceremony, the company paid tribute to employees from different generations who have contributed to the plant’s development. Michelin also emphasized its commitment to an inclusive workplace culture, ensuring equal opportunities, and fostering continuous learning throughout employees’ careers.

Michelin Hungária’s social responsibility initiatives include more than HUF 420 million in support provided to healthcare and educational institutions, as well as more than 26,000 hours of volunteer work performed by employees.

AT the Oct. 9 event, Michelin Hungária announced that it would make a HUF 30 mln donation to the hospital in Nyíregyháza for the purchase of medical equipment, in line with its long-term commitment to supporting the local community.

Other initiatives include donating tires to civil society and community organizations and signing the Hungarian Diversity Charter. The company has been awarded the “Family-Friendly Workplace” and “Fair Workplace” titles, as well as the Business Ethics Award.
