According to specialist online electric mobility publication Villanyautósok, the city also postponed the introduction of double parking fees for cars heavier than 2 tonnes by one year, moving the start date to Jan. 1, 2028, after concerns that the rule would unfairly penalize newer EVs with heavy batteries rather than older diesel cars.
A civil petition demanding the return of fully free EV parking and reconsideration of the weight‑based surcharge gathered more than 1,500 signatures in under two days, becoming the city’s most successful initiative to date.
Because the petition passed 1,000 signatures, city leaders must now consult with its organizers, and if support reaches 10,000, the assembly must formally debate the proposal.
Petitioners argue that delaying the weight‑fee by one year does not resolve the disproportionate burden placed on modern EVs as larger battery capacities continue to increase vehicle weight.
