Budapest Airport breaks ground on EUR 32 mln logistics base

City

Budapest Airport, operator of the captitalʼs Ferenc Liszt International Airport, broke ground Friday on a EUR 32 million logistics base, dubbed Cargo City, state news wire MTI reported.

The investment will raise cargo capacity at the airport to an annual 200,000 tones, said Budapest Airport CEO Jost Lammers. Last year, cargo turnover at the airport was 127,000 tonnes, up 39% from two years earlier, he added.

In the first phase of the investment, a 20,000 square-meter building will be constructed for non-integrated carriers such as Qatar Cargo, Silk Way, Turkish Cargo, Cargolux and AirBridgeCargo.

TNT, UPS, DHL and FedEx will continue to use the airportʼs old Terminal 1. A 32,000 sqm service area will also be built, large enough for two Boeing 747s.

In the second phase, a center for freight forwarders will be built.    Cargo City is part of an ongoing HUF 60 bln development program at the airport.
