More Tourists Spent Fewer Nights in Hungary in June

In June 2023, the number of tourist arrivals increased by 3.8%, while that of tourism nights fell by 0.8% in Hungary compared to June 2022, according to data published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

Compared to June 2022, the number of domestic tourist arrivals decreased by 7.1% and that of domestic tourism nights by 10%. Tourist arrivals numbered 934,000 and tourism nights spent 2.2 million at tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 647,000 tourist arrivals and 1.5 million tourism nights. Some 61% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 10% lower than a year earlier.

The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was down by 7.7% compared to June 2022. The two most popular tourism regions, Lake Balaton and the Eger tourism region registered 32% and 9.4%, respectively, of domestic tourism nights.

On the other hand, the number of international tourist arrivals rose by 25% and that of international tourism nights by 14% compared to the same month of the previous year. The 665,000 guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent 1.8 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 495,000 guests and 1.3 million tourism nights, respectively. Some 75% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 13% higher than a year earlier.

The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments grew by 21% compared to June 2022. The most popular tourism region was Lake Balaton, where 14% of international tourism nights were registered.

The total gross sales revenues of commercial accommodation establishments amounted to HUF 54 billion, which was 17% higher at current prices than a year earlier, the statistics office says. Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend HUF 2.9 bln, about 3.3% less at current prices, at commercial accommodation establishments.

In January-June 2023, tourist accommodation establishments registered 1.3% more, a total of almost 16 million tourism nights, compared to the same period of 2022.

Domestic guests spent 8% fewer and foreign ones 13% more (respectively 8.1 million and 7.9 million) tourism nights in Hungary.
