Magyar Narancs says that the alleged move comes at a time when the current editor-in-chief of Bors, Ferenc Pallagi, will soon leave the paper after holding the position for ten years. Magyar Narancs recalls that Bors carried sensitive reports about a Fidesz politician’s traveling by helicopter to a wedding at the same time as the biggest left-leaning Népszabadság, since shut down, with its publisher now bought by a company said to be close to Fidesz.
Hungarian online news portal index.hu recalls that the Fidesz-friendly media has recently been expanding. Magyar Idők, which replaced economic daily Napi Gazdaság, is widely regarded as a pro-government paper, index.hu says, while online news portal origo.hu was reported to have been acquired by Fidesz-friendly circles, as has the second biggest commercial channel TV2.
Similarly to Népszabadság publisher Mediaworks, which also owns a number 0f provincial papers, Lapcom, the Cayman Islands-registered publisher of Bors, also owns regional papers including Kisalföld and Délmagyarország. According to Magyar Narancs, Fidesz has already sent a delegation to London to negotiate the sale of the press portfolio.
