Guest nights declined 5.8% to 6.9 million, while gross accommodation revenue fell by the same percentage to HUF 151.9 bln, according to data published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

On a seasonally adjusted basis, arrivals decreased 11% and guest nights fell 8.1% compared with August 2025.

Commercial accommodation establishments accounted for 68% of guests, with arrivals down 2.8% from a year earlier. Private and other accommodation establishments recorded a steeper decline of 15%.

Domestic Arrivals Decline Despite Hotel Growth

Domestic arrivals fell 2.5% year-on-year, while domestic guest nights decreased 2.8%. Seasonally adjusted figures showed declines of 0.1% and 2.1%, respectively.

Some 1.4 million domestic guests spent nearly 3.9 million nights at tourist accommodation establishments. Of these, commercial establishments recorded 933,000 arrivals and 2.4 million guest nights.

Hotels accounted for 66% of domestic arrivals at commercial accommodation establishments and recorded a 3.2% increase in domestic guests. Domestic arrivals at private and other accommodation establishments declined 3.9%.

Among tourism areas, domestic arrivals increased the most in Bük and Sárvár, rising 6.7%, while the Eger region recorded the largest decline, at 6.3%. Budapest saw domestic arrivals grow 8.1%, while Lake Balaton recorded a 3.6% decrease.

International Arrivals Fall Across Tourism Areas

International arrivals declined 13% year-on-year, while international guest nights fell 9.3%. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the decreases were 14% and 12%, respectively.

Nearly 1.2 million international guests spent almost 3.1 million nights at Hungarian accommodation establishments. Commercial establishments accounted for 824,000 of those arrivals and 2 million guest nights.

Hotels received three-quarters of international arrivals at commercial accommodation establishments, with their foreign guest numbers edging down 0.1%. International arrivals at private and other accommodation establishments dropped 29%.

International arrivals declined in every tourism area, with the steepest decrease recorded in the Szeged region, at 21%. Foreign arrivals fell 15% in Budapest and 14% at Lake Balaton.

Accommodation Revenue Falls 5.8%

A total of 35,621 accommodation establishments welcomed guests during August, comprising 2,945 commercial establishments and 32,676 private or other establishments.

Among commercial accommodation establishments, 1,034 hotels and 1,129 boarding houses operated for part or all of the month.

Total gross accommodation revenue reached HUF 151.9 bln, down 5.8% at current prices compared with a year earlier.

Spending at accommodation establishments using Széchenyi Recreation Cards totaled nearly HUF 7.6 bln, an increase of 0.4% at current prices.

Eight-Month Arrivals Edge Lower

In January-August, tourist accommodation establishments recorded almost 13.4 million arrivals, down 0.9% from the same period in 2025.

Domestic arrivals increased 1% to nearly 7 million, while international arrivals fell 2.9% to 6.4 million.
