According to the daily, the new law stipulates that those asylum-seekers who begin the procedure in Hungary, but arrived to the country from Serbia, may automatically be rejected by the Hungarian Office of Immigration and Nationality and could be sent back to Serbia in the coming days.
Although the Hungarian government recently declared Serbia a “safe third country”, according to UNHCR’s policy, Serbia is not a safe country, Ernő Simon, UNHCR spokesperson for Hungary, told the Budapest Business Journal, noting that “the asylum system in Serbia does not operate properly.” According to Simon, those people who “are sent back to Serbia are very likely not to become a part of a proper asylum system and it is very unlikely that they will be granted protection.”
The Hungarian government has been making numerous steps to stop the influx of migrant from Serbia into Hungary. Recent news reports suggest that the construction of the “temporary” wire fence the Hungarian government is building on the Serbian border was launched this past Saturday in 12 separate locations. Hungaryʼs Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that the fence will be erected by August 31 at the latest. Reports suggest that the government is using the help of fostered workers and prisoners for the construction of the fence.
