Protesters, who said the planned construction of several museums in City Park will decrease green areas in the city and destroy local fauna and flora, were being removed from their camp by the Hungarian police this morning, according to reports.
According to the Facebook post put up by the protesters this morning, the police said they were authorized to act by a local court registrar, who issued a property protection declaration for the area where the protesters have been camping. The registrar’s declaration reportedly says the camp is located on a site legally slated for construction.
The activists said they believe the declaration is unlawful and they also said that the area has not been officially declared a construction site, therefore it is public place still.
Opponents to the planned park construction say that polls show most people in Budapest oppose the plans. They also say that claims that the construction will add green space is misleading, as planners count rooftop lawns as green space, but the construction is expected to reduce the number of trees in the park.
