Poll: Majority wants museums out of BP City Park
Some 81% of Budapest-dwellers said in a poll that they support the idea of renovating City Park (Városliget) but do not want to see execution of the governmentʼs current plan to construct new buildings and add museums in the park, according to a press release from Greenpeace.
“The poll clearly revealed that the protection of green areas is of utmost importance for the population of Budapest and they would like to see the new museums built in places other than the City Park”, Greenpeace said in the press statement, adding that it showed there is a need for a public discussion of the governmentʼs plans for the park.
Greenpeace said it commissioned a Medián Opinion & Market Research Ltd. poll that was conducted on Thursday, based on on a sample of 500 Budapest residents.
Some 86% of the participants in the poll said they believe the museums that have been planned should not be constructed in City Park but in other parts of the city, where they would not jeopardize green areas, Greenpeace said.
Four fifths of the respondents reportedly said they would prefer to preserve City Parkʼs public park function instead. Only 13% said they agreed with a renovation of City Park that includes the construction of new buildings, while 86% of the respondents said the new museums should be built in places where they do not jeopardize existing green areas, Greenpeace said.
According to Greenpeace, people seem to have strong opinion on the issue, as only 2% do not support either of the approaches and 4% cannot or would not like to give an opinion on the question.
Local residents and members of the opposition parties have criticized plans to renovate City Park, and activists are currently camping out in the park in an effort to prevent trees from being cut down.
While the current government plan is supposed to increase the number of green spaces in the park, opponents note that these green spaces include grass that would be planted on the rooftops of the new buildings.
