Online economic news publication Világgazdaság reports that, until now, the riverbed belonged to the state while the shoreline fell under city control, resulting in short 1–2‑year port‑usage contracts that blocked long‑term investment and left many docks in poor condition.

Under the new model, all revenue from river traffic will be reinvested into upgrading the embankments, protecting built heritage, and expanding public use of the riverfront.

Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy said the goal is to link the Danube’s economic use more directly with urban development so the waterfront can become “a true pride of the city” rather than a neglected area.

The cooperation framework is part of the government’s bro ader effort to reset relations with Budapest at the start of the new political cycle.
