The minister said in a Facebook post on Monday that the government decided at the end of July that reconstruction of the bridge and development of the service infrastructure of the Csepel Free Port and container terminal would begin before the end of this year, he noted.

Vitézy said 10%-15% of all rail freight in Hungary travels over the bridge. Because of its dilapidated condition, a 5 km/h speed limit has been in force on the bridge since 2014, he added.

The construction contract was signed with Hungarian company HE-DO, which won the public procurement tender with a bid of HUF 21 bln, the minister said.

“It is particularly pleasing that five companies or consortia took part in the public procurement, so that real price competition has finally developed. This is proven by the fact that the net amount of the winning bid was lower than the bids in the public procurement procedure canceled by János Lázár, the former transport and investment minister,” Vitézy said.

The investment can be completed by the end of 2029, he added.
