Hungary hosts international cricket tournament
The unmistakable sound of willow on leather adds an unusual international flavor to the sporting summer in Hungary as the Hungarian Cricket Association (HCA) hosts the 2nd Pan-European T20 Cricket Cup for five full days running July 27–31, according to an official press release issued yesterday.
Joining hosts Hungary, national men’s teams from Malta, Romania and Bulgaria have accepted the invitation to take part in 2016, alongside UCT, a strong club side from the United Arab Emirates. The Malta team returns as defending champions, having beaten UCT in the final of the first, smaller edition of the event in 2014.
The event takes place at the HCA’s GB Oval ground in Sződliget, 25 km north of Budapest. The five teams all play each other in round-robin format over the four days of July 27–30. On Sunday July 31, a 3rd/4th place playoff begins at 11 am, with the Grand Final at 2.30 pm to decide this year’s Pan-European T20 Cup Champions.
The tournament kicks off at 10 a.m. Wednesday, with a rematch of the 2014 final between Malta and UCT. Hungary’s opening match follows against UCT on the same day from 3 p.m. The full schedule of matches can be found on the Hungarian cricket website.
Entry to the tournament is free to the public. The organizers promise a great atmosphere for all the family, with food and cold drinks on sale at the ground all day, according to the official press release.
The ground can be easily reached by train from Nyugati station, direct to Sződliget on the commuter line twice hourly (direction Vác). By car, visitors can take Highway 2 via Dunakeszi/ Göd, or motorway M2 (E77). The GB Oval ground lies a short distance from the Sződliget train station at the end of Új utca.

The Hungarian Cricket Association was founded in 2007, and Hungary was accepted as an Affiliate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2012. Senior league cricket in Hungary is currently marking its tenth season, involving seven teams in two divisions, as well as a T20 Cup competition to follow in August and September. Besides running competitions, the HCA also manages schools programs and various outreach initiatives to spread the game among the local populace.
