“The Operational Group, considering safety aspects, decided to start the August 20th fireworks display an hour later than planned,” said Zoltán Kovács, the state secretary responsible for international communications and relations, in a post on X.
Kovács led the operational group, which had been carefully watching the forecast throughout the day to determine whether to hold the festivities or not, due to thunderstorms expected in the evening.
As anticipated, a sudden downpour started roughly 30 minutes before the original start time of 9 p.m. Although this cast the event into doubt, the operational group ultimately decided to wait out the storm and delay the event by one hour.
“The approval of the several hundred thousand people who watched Europe’s largest fireworks display on-site is proof that this responsible decision was worth making,” Kovács said following the event.
