Both deaths and births down, natural decrease slows

Preliminary data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) show that in the first half of 2018, the number of live births was down 2.4% and there were 3.8% fewer deaths than in the corresponding period of 2017. As a result, the natural decrease was 1,597 (6.3%) fewer than in the first six months of 2017.

In June 2018 alone, some 7,511 children were born, 0.1% more than in June 2017, while the number of deaths was 9,389, a decrease of 1.8% year-on-year. As a result, the natural decrease was 1,878 in June 2018, as opposed to 2,054 in June 2017, a decline of 8.6%.

In January–June 2018, a total of 43,069 children were born, some 1,040 (2.4%) fewer than in the first half of 2017. The largest drop of 7.3% occurred in May. A total of 66,869 Hungarians passed away in the first six months of this year, 3.8% or numerically 2,637 fewer than in the equivalent period of 2017. The largest decrease of 22% was recorded in January.

As a result, the natural decrease fell from 25,397 in January–June 2017, to 23,800 persons in H1 2018, an improvement of 6.3%.

There were 8.9 live births and 13.8 deaths recorded per thousand inhabitants in the first half. The number of infant deaths was 3.3 per thousand live births in the same period.

The number of births declined in all regions, except for a slight increase of 0.6% in Western Transdanubia. The most significant declines were recorded in Southern Transdanubia and Central Transdanubia (5.1% and 4.3%, respectively).

The number of deaths increased slightly in the Northern Great Plain region, while declining in the other regions. The largest declines in deaths were recorded in Southern Transdanubia and Southern Great Plain (6.0% and 5.9%, respectively).

The rate of natural decrease increased by 5.5% in Northern Great Plain, mainly due to an increase in the number of deaths, and declined in all other regions. The natural decrease declined the most in Budapest (12%).

The number of marriages registered in Hungary in January-June this year was 22,161, some 1.7% more than in H1 2017. The number of marriages increased by 6.5% year-on-year in June alone.

Data on births, deaths and marriages for the period January–July 2018 will be published by the KSH on September 26.
