The Central Agriculture Office has fined eight Tesco supermarkets in Hungary a combined HUF 1.2 million for violation of hygienic and food safety regulations, the daily Magyar Nemzet reported on Tuesday.

Magyar Nemzet said that the regulatory authority imposed the fines on two Tesco stores in Eger and one each in Budapest, Miskolc, Békéscsaba, Cegléd, Tahitótfalu and Szarvas for inadequate hygienic conditions in warehouses, dressing rooms and waste containers as well as for stocking outdated or improperly labeled food.

The Central Agriculture Office conducted inspections at Tesco stores in Hungary during the month of May, though announced the fines only following the expiration of the UK-based grocery retailer’s one-month appeal period.

Tesco has 206 hypermarkets, supermarkets, express and S-market stores in Hungary.
