The sector has been hit by extreme drought, weak pork and dairy prices, and stagnant agricultural lending since 2024.

Exports have also suffered as the euro has strengthened to an expected HUF 360-370 range compared with HUF 380-410 a year earlier, cutting euro-based export revenues by about 10%.

Corn production is expected to reach only 1.4-1.5 million tonnes in 2026, roughly half the level of a typical year, while EU corn import demand could increase from 15 million-18 million tonnes to up to 26 million tonnes. Despite corn prices holding at around HUF 86,000-88,000 per tonne, high production costs mean many farmers remain unprofitable.

The pork sector faces additional challenges, with Spain’s pork exports to China falling 21% while exports to Hungary rose 23% to 33,000 tonnes, further depressing local prices. K&H noted that only two of its agricultural clients have used debt-repayment moratoriums.
