Based on the latest forecast from weather service HungaroMet, peak temperatures could reach 37 C on Thursday and 38 C on Friday, as another spell of intense summer heat moves across the country.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, the National Center for Public Health and the National Directorate General for Disaster Management warned that prolonged heat poses a significant health risk and urged people to pay increased attention to their own health and that of those in their care.

The authorities issued particular advice for those attending events linked to the Aug. 20 national holiday, recommending that they carry enough drinking water, use sunscreen and wear light, light-colored clothing, headwear and sunglasses with UV protection.

They also advised people to avoid alcohol, highly caffeinated drinks and sugary beverages during the heatwave.

During the hottest part of the day, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., people should remain in cool places where possible and avoid strenuous physical activity, the statement said.

Authorities also recommended shading homes during the day and ventilating them at night to help keep indoor temperatures lower.
