The business confidence index also climbed by more than three points, with industry up four points, construction up five points, trade up nearly six points, and services up one point.

Hiring expectations softened, with only 8% of companies planning to expand staff in the next three months, while 11% expect reductions.

Price expectations strengthened, with 35% of firms planning price increases and 5% expecting cuts, compared with 30% and 8% in March.

The consumer confidence index rose, driven by a sharply improved outlook for the country’s next 12 months, although households’ own financial expectations for the coming year worsened slightly. 

Inflation expectations barely changed, while views on future unemployment deteriorated modestly.
