Lázár said the government would submit a bill to lawmakers codifying the basic rights of passengers on public transport, including access to and frequency of service.
The government could start the construction of 500 km of new railways over four years starting in 2025, funding the projects with a 30-year EUR 1 billion loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and EUR 1 bln from the budget, he said.
He added that the transport projects would include capacity to serve industry, including the reconstruction of a bridge in the south of the capital that connects to a port on the Danube.
He said the passenger fleet of state-owned railway company MAV could be renewed through the local production of carriages, buying new rolling stock with credit and acquiring used trains.
Talks on a buyout offer by Hungary’s Magyar Vágon for Spanish rolling stock maker Talgo could establish the conditions for production of carriages in Hungary, he added.
