Romanian minister tees off on Hungarian “interference”

In the leadup to a youth camp for Hungarians in Baile Tusnad this week, Romanian State Secretary for European Affairs, George Ciamba, publicly levied a complaint against the Hungarian co-organizers, citing them for “interference with [the] democratic, legitimate and sovereign process of Romania” in Romania.

On the ministry’s official website, Ciamba likened organizing the camp to “holding a session of the Hungarian government in Romania” with a blatant focus on promoting Hungary’s national policy and the Hungarian minority in Romania. Such acts are “susceptible of breaking the spirit of the strategic partnership for the 21st century between Romania and Hungary.”

Hungary’s Foreign Ministry State Secretary Zsolt Németh shot back yesterday stating that the Hungarian constitution provides for support of ethnic Hungarians living in Romania. With regard to the Szekler population of Romania, Németh stated that “this is a problem having to do with democracy in Romania. If there is a sizeable community of a given country [with requests] not running contrary to the legislation in force, we believe the requests should be considered.”

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is scheduled to address the camp on Saturday.
