Chief vet Lajos Bognár told the paper that getting essential basic ingredients had become "more difficult" for food industry companies because of the war in Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine together account for about four-fifths of global sunflower seed oil production.
Food companies are already feeling the effect of shortages of sunflower seed cooking oil. Bognár said authorities are continuously working with affected parties to find solutions.
The resolution allowing food companies to replace sunflower seed oil with rapeseed oil could impact businesses that make pre-cooked products, mayonnaise, biscuits, or margarine. Bognár said authorities don't know how many companies or products will be affected.
Hungary produces enough sunflower seed oil to meet domestic demand and it is a net exporter of rapeseed oil. Companies that use rapeseed oil, instead of sunflower seed oil, in their products must modify their labeling and ensure compliance with all food safety requirements.
