According to news wire MTI, he added that he regretted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent electoral defeat.
Asked about his visit to Budapest a few days before the national election, Vance said: “We went because it was the right thing to do to stand behind a person who had stood by us for a very long time.”
Referring to Orbán, Vance said he was one of the few European leaders to have stood up against a European bureaucracy on bad terms with the United States, adding that his 16 year premiership had fundamentally changed Hungary.
