The measure affects diplomats serving at the Hungarian Embassy in Moscow and the consulates in St. Petersburg and Kazan, who must leave Russia within two weeks. The ministry’s statement did not specify how many diplomats were affected.

Foreign Minister Anita Orbán announced Sept. 8 that the Hungarian government believed 10 staff members at the Russian mission had conducted activities in Hungary unacceptable for a diplomat under the Vienna Convention. The government was therefore expelling them from the country.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said shortly afterward that Moscow would respond “at the appropriate time”.
