News portal Index.hu quoted the embassy as saying: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of David B. Cornstein, former U.S. Ambassador to Hungary.”

Cornstein served in Budapest from 2018 to 2020 during a pivotal period in US-Hungarian relations and remained a steadfast advocate for stronger bilateral ties.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife, children, family, and many friends,” the embassy said.

Born on August 17, 1938 in New York, Cornstein was a businessman and diplomat whose maternal grandparents emigrated from Hungary to the United States.

He spent much of his career in the jewellery industry and ran for New York City mayor in 1985 and 1991.

He announced he was stepping down as ambassador on September 15, 2020 and was awarded Hungary’s Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Merit that same year.
