In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Energy Ministry said Hungary had abstained from the Energy Council’s vote on a partial mandate on the 2028-2034 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
Lantos said the draft regulation didn’t ensure support for fossil fuel infrastructure, even as the European Commission pressed for the diversification of gas supply. He pressed for a “rational” energy policy that takes into account “physical and geopolitical realities”.
In a discussion at the meeting of the European grids package, Lantos pointed to the need for better integration of transmission systems and warned that a top-down approach recommended for future investments raised legal concerns.
He said a harmonized framework at EU level could serve as a guideline, but only if it took into account the energy aspects and priorities specific to member states.
