The EU’s strategic goal for 2021–2030 is to raise the average share of tertiary‑educated young adults to 45%, a target Hungary is far from reaching.

In 2024, 39% of Hungarian women and 26% of men in this age group held a degree, compared with the EU averages of 50% for women and 39% for men.

In 2025, the gender gap persisted, with 38% of Hungarian women and roughly 10 percentage points fewer men belonging to the highest‑educated group.

Regional disparities also remained significant. Budapest recorded the highest rate at 62%, Pest County reached 33%, and all other regions fell between 21% and 26%.
