Hungary will consider offering migrants who enter the country a “one-way ticket” to Brussels, free of charge, if an agreement with the European Commission on processing arrivals in transit zones can’t be reached, Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, said at a regular press briefing.
“As long as Brussels forces rules on Hungary that don’t allow migrants to be detained at the border, they will be offered passage to Brussels, free of charge, in compliance with European procedures,” Gulyás said. “If Brussels wants migrants, they can have them,” he added.
Gulyás said the justice minister had been given a mandate to weigh how to recover from the European Union budget funding that has gone to protect the border from migrants with a suit.
In a ruling in June, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ordered Hungary to pay a lump sum of EUR 200 million and a penalty of EUR 1 mln per day of delay for failure to comply with an earlier ruling on asylum and return.
