The European Commission has been observing Romania and Bulgaria as to their progress in the fields of justice and fighting corruption since they joined the EU On Monday, the EU Commission presented its semi-annual interim report. Wolfgang Böhm comments: “The EU institutions are slowly running out of patience with Romania and Bulgaria. The two new Member States have done all too little so far to get the problem of corruption and organized crime under control. If significant progress is not made by summer, the protective clause could be activated. … To date, the EU Commission has shrunk back from imposing sanctions on the two new EU Members. But concern in Brussels is growing that both countries could become latent insecurity factors in the Union.” (courrierinternational)
